A Visit to the University of Miami
The University of Miami has about 12,000 undergraduates who study in 180 different majors. Attending the University of Miami gives creative students access to the social and cultural life of a large university while still enabling them to focus on their creative interests. In addition to its world famous Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science it is also home to these outstanding creative schools and departments.
School of Architecture (also known as U-SoA) prides itself on its project based curriculum and offers the five year BArch degree. It also offers a six year BArch + MBA degree in conjunction with the business school, which prepares students to open their own architecture firm. Student projects often relate to the needs of the greater Miami community. Unusual for an architecture program is the ability to study abroad in Rome for a semester. Application to the program requires a portfolio.
Frost School of Music studies in music are guided by the Frost Method which uses small classes to teach students the skills to become employed musicians upon graduation. The school offers a wide variety of majors (BM) and minors and performance certificates. They offer instrumental programs in Brass, Chamber Music, Classical Guitar, Flute, Harp, Percussion, Strings and Woodwinds. The day I visited there were many students practicing outside, a testament to the warm Miami climate. Application to the program requires an audition.
Department of Cinematic Arts offers BS tracks in Business, Critical Studies, Motion Pictures Business Track, General, Production, and Screenwriting. Students enter this major after completing five core subjects and are not required to submit a portfolio for admission. BS students are required to study a minor in addition to this major.
Department of Art offers both a BA and BFA with concentrations in Ceramics + Glass + Sculpture, Graphic Design + Multimedia, Painting + Drawing, Photography, and Printmaking. The BA program requires that students also study a minor (not necessarily in the arts), the BFA program includes an automatic minor in Art History.
University of Miami is a beautiful campus and a school with a robust social life both on campus with a multitude of clubs, athletic events, cultural events, and greek life, and off campus in nearby Coconut Grove and other Miami neighborhoods.
